Fifth Avenue Committee (FAC), is a nationally recognized South Brooklyn based, non-profit community de-
velopment corporation formed in 1978 whose mission is to advance economic and social justice by building
vibrant, diverse communities where residents has genuine opportunities to achieve their goals as well as the
power to shape the community's future. FAC works to transform the lives of over 5,000 low and moderate
income New Yorkers annually so that we can all live and work with dignity and respect while making our
community more equitable, sustainable, inclusive and just.

To achieve our mission FAC develops and manages affordable housing and community facilities, creates eco-
nomic opportunities and ensures access to economic stability, organizes residents and workers, offers student
centered adult education, and combats displacement caused by gentrification. In addition to our grassroots
neighborhood work, we are actively involved in broader coalitions and campaigns. FAC launched the South
Brooklyn Accountable Development Initiative (SBADI) nearly 5 years ago to ensure public participation, es-
pecially by traditionally marginalized communities, in public policies, public decision making and large scale
projects impacting South Brooklyn. SBADI works to advance equitable and accountable development, sus-
tainability, environmental justice, decent jobs and livable communities while increasing local participation and
understanding of complex public policies.

The Community Organizer will work closely with the Executive Director and Director of Organizing and
other community leaders and colleagues as needed to ensure effective SBADI campaigns and coalition par-
ticipation. The SBADI Community Organizer will be responsible for leading Fifth Avenue Committee’s
(FAC) South Brooklyn Accountable Development Initiative (SBADI) which advances a new vision of eco-
nomic development in New York City in which public policy delivers truly affordable housing, environmental
justice and sustainability, living wage jobs and livable neighborhoods. Through SBADI, and community orga-
nizing FAC organizes residents and stakeholders around housing, development, economic development, en-
vironmental issues, and eviction prevention in the neighborhoods of Prospect Heights, Park Slope, Gowanus,
Red Hook, and Sunset Park. FAC also responds to emerging borough and city wide concerns connected to
accountable development principles. This position involves community education, policy analysis, grassroots
organizing as well as individual advocacy for residents facing displacement pressures.

· Work closely with Executive Director and Organizing Director in the oversight of SBADI's strate-
gies and goals.
· Plan, organize, and conduct outreach field operations for public forums and events convened by
FAC’s accountable development initiative
· Lead local campaigns to further SBADI’s Accountable Development Principles.
· Develop Community Education Programs to engage community residents and stakeholders (espe-
cially low and moderate income individuals directly impacted by public policy) in SBADI’s core con-
cepts with topics including, but not limited to: Zoning and Land Use, Brownfield redevelopment and
environmental justice, Gowanus Canal Superfund, Affordable Housing, participatory budgeting and
public investment in shared growth strategies.
· Staff and strengthen the Accountable Development Working Group by engaging community leaders
in discussing and guiding SBADI’s work.
· Identify and develop new leaders for SBADI’s work
· Staff, participate, and organize as needed, in neighborhood, borough, and citywide working groups
and coalitions.
· Develop and maintain relationships with community leaders, elected officials, and decision makers.
· Conduct grassroots policy research, analysis, and draft recommendations and reports as needed.
· Recruit and supervise interns and volunteers as needed
· Work with organizing team and FAC's Single Stop to provide individual advocacy for low-income
families facing displacement pressures including but not limited to: referral to legal services, assis-
tance navigating housing court and administrative processes, assistance obtaining rental assistance
and entitlements.
· Maintain and update data base of residents and stakeholders and maintain files as needed and re-
quired.
· Other responsibilities as assigned

· Bachelors degree required
· At least 5 years experience in community organizing and advocacy including experience leading organiz-
ing campaigns in low and/or mixed income communities required
· Prior experience advancing progressive public policies required.
· Knowledge of and experience with intersection of urban planning, land-use and environmental issues and
economic development with grassroots community organizing and economic and social justice preferred.
· Experience writing policy reports and recommendations and conducting grassroots research preferred.
· Excellent interpersonal and problem solving skills
· Respect for racial, ethnic and economic diversity. Experience working with low-income populations is
required
· Strong writing, data management and computer skills (Word, Excel, Access required
· Bi-lingual Spanish/English required
· Value FAC’s mission of economic and social justice

Compensation:
Salary range - $40-45k annually, commensurate with experience. Competitive benefits package includes full health and dental insurance (following three month wait period), 18 days paid vacation annually, paid sick and personal days and 403B employee retirement savings and flexible spending accounts.
